Fair Lane features a wide fold up brim to keep your ears two-layer cozy, while an intriguing allover cable pattern resolves to a rapidly decreased crown giving the hat just the right amount of pooch. Finally, a large pom has then been added just for a bit of whimsy.

This pattern has been professionally tech edited and test knit to reduce the potential for error.

SIZE(S):

Hat fits an adult head size of approx 21” – 24” (53.5 cm – 61 cm). Additional sizes available by working more/fewer full pattern and/or row repeats.

CHARTED/WRITTEN:

The pattern is fully charted, but also includes complete written directions so the ability to read a chart is not necessary to work this pattern.

GAUGE:

28 stitches/32 rounds to 4” x 4” (10 cm x 10 cm) in cable pattern stitch, unblocked.

The hat is provisionally cast on for a tubular cast-on and then worked in the round. Instructions are provided for using either cable cast-on or long tail cast-on as alternative cast on methods.

Pompom utilizes approx 80 yds (73 m) of yarn. Pompom yardage is included in yarn requirements listed above.

Hat features an attractive decrease and looks just as lovely without a pompom should you wish to forego this extra embellishment.

To work this pattern, you will need to know:

Knit and purl stitches
Cable cast-on
Cable stitches – PC, 2/2LC, 2/2RC, DCLC, DCRC (decrease cables)
Decrease stitches – CDD, K2TOG
Crochet provisional cast-on/tubular cast-on

YARN:

Allow approx 315 yds (288 m) of worsted weight yarn (includes pom pom). For hat alone, allow approx 235 yds (215 m) of worsted weight yarn.

Pink sample knit using two 3.5 oz/100 gr (210 yds/192 m) skeins of Malabrigo Rios (100% Superwash Merino Wool) in 689 Valentina. Grey sample knit using one 16 oz/454 gr (1,020 yds/932 m) skein of Lion Brand Yarns Pound of Love (100% Premium Acrylic) in 151 Elephant Grey.

NEEDLES:

US 5 (3.75 mm) 16” (40 cm) circular needle
US 7 (4.5 mm) 16” (40 cm) circular needle Or
US 7 (4.5 mm) 6” (15cm) [or shorter] double-pointed needles

Or any size needed to obtain correct gauge.

NOTIONS:

G-6 (4.0 mm) crochet hook (for provisional cast-on)
2.7 yds (2.5 m) scrap contrasting color worsted yarn (for crochet provisional cast-on)
Stitch marker
Cable needle
Tapestry/blunt yarn needle
T-pins (optional, for blocking)
